What is the future of open source CRM?

Published: 11/7/2019 9:13:18 AM

Open source customer relationship management, or CRM, is a CRM system that makes source code available to the public. With this open system, the public can use and modify code completely free of charge. It allows individuals and organizations to have total control over what they want their code and code-based applications to be; it also promotes freedom of expression and creativity, making it possible to freely distribute and share the code in question.

With so much free usable code around, developing even the most complex applications is less of a hassle. When you’ve got a solid base of code that’s ready to use, you can focus on the changes you want to make rather than starting from the ground up. While open source CRM is straightforward and free to use, it doesn’t come with the same fancy features as other code; you’ll have to implement them yourself!

What is the future of open source CRM?

The future of open source CRM is still up in the air, but we can make an educated guess based on the pros and cons of the program itself. Open source CRM’s nature lends it to individuals or small businesses that are more concerned with careful spending that fancy coding. The tradeoff is that open source CRM may require more of a time commitment than many other forms of code. Because the code is free, it’s not necessarily designed to be customized to exactly what you want it to do, and it often takes some tinkering with the code to get the results you’re looking for.

These open source CRM platforms also don’t offer much support. When you’re relying primarily on open source, you’ll probably be relying heavily on forums or other users to answer the questions you might have. For some people, this can be a serious drawback. Even with these factors taken into consideration, though, the future of open source CRM seems fairly bright. More and more young people are becoming interested in coding, and small companies and start-ups are experiencing a surge in popularity.

As long as there are individuals and small groups more interested in this cost-effective way of writing your own code than the security and ease of use that comes from paid code, open source CRM will continue to grow.
